- Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by about 40% compared to existing petrochemical products, drawing keen interest in global and export markets

SK Chemicals is launching a full-scale attack on the high-function fiber and sports material market with its bio-green material, Ecotrion.

SK Chemicals (CEO Jeon Kwang-hyun) announced on the 25th that it has started supplying Ecotrion, a natural material, to Hyosung TNC, a spandex specialist, and Carbon, a global 3D printing company.

‘Ecotrion’ is an eco-friendly polyol made by fermenting 100% plant-based raw materials and is used as an essential raw material for manufacturing urethane elastic materials, spandex, artificial leather, etc. In particular, it is receiving attention from companies in the global fiber and sports goods market, where carbon regulations are being strengthened, such as in the EU, as an eco-friendly material that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 40% compared to existing petrochemical products.

Hyosung TNC recently launched the world's first eco-friendly bio-spandex, 'Creora® Bio-based', using SK Chemicals' Ecotrion. Hyosung TNC plans to start domestic production of this product and expand to global production bases such as Vietnam in the future to fully enter the global market. In addition, SK Chemicals is also supplying Ektrion to Carbon, a US-based 3D printing company that produces premium sports materials. Carbon applies Ecotrion to 3D printing liquid resins to produce high-functional sports equipment that require shock absorption and support, and supplies them to global sports brands.

Meanwhile, SK Chemicals participated in the NW Materials Show, a famous shoe exhibition in the western United States, held on the 10th to promote Ecotrion, and received a great response. SK Chemicals announced that Ecotrion attracted much attention at this exhibition, with recycling and bio-material products in line with the eco-friendly and sustainable trends receiving much attention, and consulting with many global major sports brands on the application of materials.

According to Mirae Asset Securities' Global Sportswear Report, the global sportswear (including shoes) market is estimated to be worth about 337 trillion won in 2021 and is expected to show a high annual growth rate of 7% until 2025. The bio-fiber market is expected to grow by an average of 5.5% annually until 2029, according to Data Bridge, a global market research firm.

SK Chemicals New Business Development Office Director Jeong Jae-jun said, "Based on the excellent properties of Ecotrion, we are expanding its use to premium product groups in the sports fashion, equipment, and clothing sectors," and "In line with the global carbon reduction and sustainable consumption trends, demand for SK Chemicals' Ecotrion is expected to continue to grow."
