- Respond to the strengthening of global plastic regulations through top-notch waste plastic recycling technology
SK Chemicals and Woosung Platech join forces to produce eco-friendly cosmetic containers.
SK Chemicals and Woosung Platech announced that they will start commercializing environmentally friendly cosmetic containers using recycled chemical materials to respond to market demand brought about by regulations on the use of plastics in the cosmetics industry at home and abroad. SK Chemicals will provide "ECOTRIA CR" material, which Woosung Platech will use to produce highly transparent cosmetic containers.
Reducing and recycling plastic waste is a very urgent task for all countries, including Europe. To this end, global cosmetics industries such as L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, and Chanel are actively promoting plastic recycling and the use of environmentally friendly packaging materials. L’Oréal plans to switch from plastic used in product packaging to packaging made from recycled materials or bio-based raw materials by 2025, and achieve 100% conversion by 2030.
"Chemical recycling" is a technology that breaks down waste plastic and returns it to a pure raw material state to create polymer plastic. "Chemically recycled" materials contain less fine foreign matter than "physically recycled" materials, allowing the production of high-quality containers required by cosmetics companies, including mechanical properties, transparency and color. In particular, the "ECOTRIA® Claro" product is classified as International Plastic Resin Identification Code No. 1 PET and can be recycled into PET after use, attracting widespread attention from overseas markets.
Woosung Platech is a global cosmetics container manufacturer that produces 500 million plastic containers annually. Not only domestic cosmetics company LG Household & Health Care, but also global luxury cosmetics companies such as L'Oréal, Lancôme, and Estee Lauder also use plastic containers produced by the company. Woosung Platech holds patents on "Method for manufacturing PET cosmetic containers that replace transparent glass" and plastic processing technology. Using this technology, we plan to use ECOTRIA® Claro to produce cosmetic containers with excellent chemical resistance and high transparency like glass, even with a thickness of 8 mm.
Woosung Platech CEO Heo Nam-seon said: "The global cosmetics container market is going beyond environmental protection and has now entered the era of 'environmentally friendly'." He added, "We are expanding our market competitiveness through product development." Various concepts of environmentally friendly cosmetic containers meet the needs of global cosmetics companies for recycled materials. "We plan to do this," he said.
SK Chemical completed a three-year expansion of its new copolyester (PETG) production facility at its Ulsan plant and started commercial production in July. SK Chemicals is committed to expanding its chemical recycling product portfolio to keep pace with the expansion of the eco-friendly plastics market. To this end, in May last year, through our equity investment in a Chinese waste plastic (PET) recycling company, we obtained the exclusive rights to operate chemically recycled raw materials and chemically recycled PET-related products in the Korean market, and produced Korea's first "Huvis" SK Chemicals plans to jointly develop chemically recycled polyester yarns from September to full-scale commercial production of chemically recycled copolyester "ECOTRIA CR" and plans to expand the sales ratio of recycled products to 50% in 2030. to 100%.
Kim Eung-soo, head of SK Chemical's copolyester division, said: "We will strive to achieve 100% sales of the new facility as soon as possible through high value-added professional market strategies." He added, "We will improve." Our ESG The management system is achieved by expanding sales of environmentally friendly materials such as chemically recycled copolyester.
